Let the Right One In: one of the best films I watched in the UK

One thing I did a lot of in the UK was watch movies.  Lots and lots of movies.  80 exactly, in fact.  The majority are quite new, but there are some slightly older ones in there.

Here’s the full list, roughly in reverse order from most recently watched (from Flixter, don’t think I missed any):

Terminator Salvation, The Echelon Conspiracy, Tyson, Spring Breakdown,  Drag Me to Hell, Coraline, Role Models, Angels and Demons, Star Trek, Fast and Furious, The Covenant, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Marley & Me, Australia, Dragonball: Evolution, Seven Pounds, Friday the 13th, The Haunting in Connecticut, Knowing, Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa, An Inconvenient Truth, The Uninvited, Watchmen, Valkyrie, The Unborn, Push, RocknRolla, Let the Right One In, City of Ember, Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans, Rachel Getting Married, Doubt, Milk, Three Kings, W, Revolutionary Road, Leatherheads, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Bangkok Dangerous, Body of Lies, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, My Best Friend’s Girl, Gran Torino, The Break-Up, Saw V, WALL-E, Ghost Town, Starship Troopers: Maruader, Slumdog Millionaire, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Frost/Nixon, The Reader, The Wrestler, In Bruges, Twilight, Babylon AD, Death Race, Pineapple Express, Be Kind Rewind, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Transporter 3, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, Changeling, Lakeview Terrace, Resident Evil: Degeneration, Max Payne, Burn After Reading, Hoop Dreams, Meet Dave, Eden Lake, Quantum of Solace, Step Brothers, The Nanny Diaries, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, There Will Be Blood, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Lost In Translation, The Dark, Mirrors.

Man, I saw a lot of crap movies!

Favourite dozen from this list (not necessarily the ‘best’ from a strict objective viewpoint, just what I liked the most):

(1) The Wrestler; (2) Let the Right One In; (3) Gran Torino; (4) There Will Be Blood; (5) Star Trek; (6) Changeling; (7) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button; (8) Revolutionary Road; (9) Pineapple Express; (10) Burn After Reading; (11) Hoop Dreams; (12) Slumdog Millionaire.

Bottom half-dozen (crappiest first):

hr_resident_evil_degeneration_dvd_cover

Resident Evil: Degeneration - pure crap

(1) Resident Evil: Degeneration; (2) Starship Troopers: Marauder; (3) Transporter 3; (4) The Covenant; (5) Dragonball: Evolution; (6) Meet Dave.

Surprisingly the shit list was a lot easier to come up with.

Terminator-salvation-poster

I went to see Terminator Salvation with reasonable (albeit guarded) expectations, but the film absolutely exceeded them.  In my humble opinion, it’s the second best film (out of four) of the great Terminator franchise.  Bearing in mind that I thought Terminator 2: Judgment Day was one of the best action movies and sequels of all time, that’s a pretty big compliment for the new film directed by McG and starring Christian Bale and Sam Worthington.

As per usual, I’ll keep plot details to an absolute minimum.  All that needs to be said is that the story revolves around a grown-up John Connor (Christian Bale, or Edward Furlong from T2 and Nick Stahl from T3).  If you’ve seen the previous 3 films or have a vague idea what they are about, then no further explanation is necessary.

However, you don’t need to have seen any of the previous Terminator films to appreciate this one.  It stands up well as an independent feature, and is significantly different in style to its predecessors.  It’s substantially more dark, grim and gritty, capturing the pessimistic mood of the world perfectly.  But when it comes to action sequences, of which Terminator Salvation has plenty, it doesn’t do too shabbily when judged under the high standards set by the franchise.

While I said the story revolves around John Connor, the movie really belongs to new character Markus Wright, played by Aussie Sam Worthington (who will be appearing in Avatar later this year and will play Perseus in the remake of Clash of the Titans).  Worthington is arguably the lead character of the film, and shares just as much as screen time as (if not more than) Bale – and he has the more interesting story.  This is the second time in a row Bale has been relegated to second fiddle despite being the supposed ‘lead character’ for a major film (the first, of course, is when Heath Ledger’s Joker upstaged his Batman in The Dark Knight).  Maybe that’s the real reason Bale went American Psycho on the set!

While Bale and Worthington hog most of the minutes, Anton Yelchin absolutely steals the show as a young Kyle Reese.  He is terrific in this role, and I have become a big fan.  Also solid is Moon Bloodgood, a Resistance soldier, and Jadagrace Berry, too cute for her own good.  Michael Ironside grunts his way through the film for his paycheck, but it is Bryce Dallas Howard that has the most thankless role as as Kate Connor.  She really got short changed.

When people hear a guy named McG directed the film (you may remember him from such films as Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle), they cringe and refuse to give it a chance.  Poor guy, but that’s the nickname he was given from birth because too many relatives had the same names (real name: Joseph McGinty Nichol).  However, McG does a splendid job in Terminator Salvation, creating a realistic, believable world, keeping the action thrilling and dynamic (with creative camera angles and movements), while managing to add in some cool homages to the previous films.  I thought they were cool anyway.

The special effects were superb, but audiences don’t expect anything less than seamless these days.  Although there were some highly creative sequences, none of them were as iconic as those from T1 or T2.

I was surprised how relatively little fanfare accompanied the release of this movie, which was the first in the franchise without Governor Schwarzenegger in the lead.  I’m not sure if it was because I was hidden from the world during my studies, but to me, Terminator Salvation had none of the hype that surrounded the release of other recent major films such as Star Trek or Angels & Demons.  Of course, there was that infamous psychotic Christian Bale rant on set that made headlines all around the world, but I don’t believe it had anything to do with the unexpected low-keyness of it all.  Then again, that didn’t stop the early reviewers of the film from spoiling the many wonderful surprises in this underrated blockbuster (if you haven’t seen it yet, dear reader, then I hope you had more success than me in avoiding them).

Okay, now the verdict.  In my opinion, it’s better than a 4-star film, but not quite good enough to warrant 4.5 stars.  Hence, I will have to settle for 4.25 stars out of 5!

Batman's not acting so tough anymore

Batman's not acting so tough anymore

It was only a matter of time.

Dark Knight Christian Bale finally spoke out on US radio about his ‘inexcusable’ rant, in which he was caught on tape going berserk on cinematographer Shane Hurlbut on the set of Terminator Salvation.

Batman admits he was a ‘punk’

Bale went on KROQ, an LA-based radio station, saying that he acted “like a punk” and “was out of order beyond belief.”  The embarrassed actor admitted he had a “potty mouth” and that he was hurt by the criticisms since the tape became public.  “The thing that disturbs me so much is that I’ve heard a lot of people saying that I seem to think that I’m better than anybody else,” Bale says.   “Nothing could be further from the truth. I am a very lucky and that is why I put so much into what I do, and why I care so much about it and why sometimes my enthusiasm just goes awry.”

Bale conceded: It’s been a miserable week for me…I regret that and there is nobody that has heard that tape that has been hit harder by it.”

No excuses

Despite saying that he made no excuses for his actions, Bale explained that the scene in which he flipped out was the key to the story, in which he was trying to convey the madness his character John Connor inherited from his mother, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton from the first two Terminator movies).

“Please, I want to make it clear,” Bale pleaded.  “I am embarrassed by it. I regret it. I ask everybody to sit down and ask themselves if they have ever had a bad day and lost their temper and really regretted it immensely.”

Please see the movie!

Bale was particularly concerned that his outburst would have a negative impact on the film at the Box Office.  “I’m asking people, please do not allow my one-time lapse in judgment, my incredibly embarrassing meltdown, to overshadow this movie and to have all of those people’s hard work  go to waste.”

(NB: are you kidding?  I want to see this film more than ever now!)

They’ve made up

Bale also says that he and his victim Shane Hurlbut have since reconciled and that they have “resolved this completely”.

According to Bale, they continued to work for a number of hours after the rant and for “at least a month after that,” adding “there is no problem whatsoever.”

He even had some kind words for the cinematographer:  “I’ve seen a rough cut of the movie and he has done a wonderful job. It looks fantastic.”

Batman’s sister says he needs help

You may recall last year that Bale was arrested for allegedly assaulting his sister Sharon and mother Jenny, but was released by police after a few hours of questioning.  Well, Sharon thought her brother’s embarrassing outburst was the perfect opportunity to rub salt into the wound.

According to the Telegraph, Sharon is “concerned” for her brother.  “It’s terribly sad,” she said.  “I feel for him. He seems to be incredibly stressed and angry at the moment. This sort of behaviour is totally out of character and I think he might need help.”

Of course, she couldn’t help but remind everyone of last year’s incident. “People might now realise that is his temper: they might understand a bit more. I wish he hadn’t carried this on so long or so fiercely. It was upsetting to hear him.”

I’ve been a huge fan of Bale since American Psycho, and I believe he’s sincere and we should give the guy a break and support the new movie (we can judge for ourselves just how intense the scene really was!).  He obviously has some anger control issues, but so did Bruce Wayne and Patrick Bateman, and we still love them both.

PS: For those who have not been fortunate enough to hear the legendary rant yet, you can check it out here.  Also, do yourself a favour if you haven’t heard of RevoLucian’s awesome remix of the rant.  It’s one of the best songs I’ve heard lately.  Really.

The Internets have been abuzz with Batman star Christian Bale’s insane flip-out on the set of Terminator Salvation (where Bale plays the grown-up John Connor).  When some guy (turns out it was Shane Hurlbut, the Director of Photography) walked onto the set in the middle of a scene (and apparently not for the first time), Bale absolutely unloads on him like Patrick Bateman from American Psycho (still my favourite Bale character by far).

Listen to the clip above.  I feel I should insert some kind of parental advisory warning here – I lost count of the number of F-bombs Bale dropped on the dude about 30 seconds into the clip.

I don’t know whether this is real or not – maybe it’s another one of those staged skits (like Michael Cera for Knocked Up), but it seems pretty genuine and there’s nothing so far to suggest it’s fake.  I’ve never been on the set of a movie before, especially one as reportedly tense as this film.  Hence I don’t know what type of basic industry rules they have about the behaviour of technical staff on sets.  I also can’t imagine the fatigue and stress actors endure during these long, endless shoots where they need to remain focused all the time.  But does that excuse what happened here?  Or did the guy get what he deserved?

NB: Christian Bale is actually a Welsh-born British actor…but he’s still a psycho.

[Update: having looked into this a bit further, it seems that the incident occurred in July 2008 but the clip did not surface until recently.  People have now done remixes of the rant on Youtube.  Whoopi Goldberg defended Bale on her talk show The View, and so did Terry Crews (a former co-star).  The filming of Terminator Salvation has since wrapped and no one was fired.  Sources say Bale and Hurlbut have made up.  Maybe he was just having a bad day.]
