Hello there, lovely subscribers.

I have finally successfully migrated my blog from wordpress.com to my own domain at http://pacejmiller.com.  Everything on this old blog has been automatically redirected to the new and improved website (lookin’ good).

Unfortunately, I don’t know how to automatically move my subscribers to the new site (it might not be possible), so if any of you would like to continue your subscriptions, please check out pacejmiller.com and subscribe using the buttons on the sidebar!

In any case, I would really appreciate it if you could please visit the new site and let me know what you think!

Cheers

A charm celebrating the 800th anniversary of the University of Cambridge (2009) -- which just happens to be the year I studied there and started this blog! (I got one of these when I graduated)

Congratulations to me!

This is the 800th post on this blog.  I thought long and hard about what to write about for this monumental occasion, but I had my usual brain freeze…so instead I decided to write about the fact that I am writing a post about my 800th post.

Today is the 30th of August, 2011.  I started this blog on the 11th of January, 2009.  By my calculations that’s 962 days.  That’s a lot of writing!

On average, that’s 1 post every 1.2025 days, 5.821 posts per week and almost 25 posts a month.  As at the time of writing I have 833,486 blog hits, which translates into an average of 1041.8575 hits per blog post and 866.409 hits per day.

When I started this blog I was happy to get around 10-20 hits a day, and certainly for the first month or two that was the norm.  Now the blog hovers around 1,000 hits a day, with occasion dips and spikes (like the current one courtesy of StumbleUpon, which is giving me around 2,500 a day).

I currently have 2,601 comments, which equals roughly 2.7 comments per day.  I’ve also been bombarded by 26,754 spam comments (I believe more as some slipped through the keeper), or a whopping 27.81 per day!  I find Akismet has been doing a much better job as of late, meaning less penile enlargement advertisements.

My top post remains My European Adventure Round-Up, which has amassed 66,273 hits, though it is almost certain to be overtaken shortly (in the next couple of days) by The 20 Most Rewatchable Movies of All-Time.

My top movie review?  Shock horror, it’s Ninja Assassin (with 12,825 hits), probably because no one else has seen it — or maybe it’s that topless shot of a ripped Rain that has web surfers flocking to it.  My top book review and writing-related post is the same one — Stephen King’s brilliant On Writing (with 12,766 hits).

Moving forward, I’m not sure if I can keep up with the same pace (pun intended).  I love to write, and that’s why I continue to write on this blog without compensation (apart from the occasional free movie, DVD or book).  Even though at some point I’ll likely be swallowed by the demands of work and other responsibilities I hope this blog can remain my sanctuary, a place I can come back to to express and rant and be creative.

The Waiting Game…and Getting Published! February 12, 2011

It’s a waiting game for me right now.

For starters, there’s not much happening around here lately as I wait for this blog to be moved from the free WordPress.com domain to my own at pacejmiller.com.

Let’s face it, I have absolutely no idea when it comes to the Internets, so all I’m doing is waiting for the free experts from the place I signed up at to work their magic.  I’m just not sure if I’ve ‘applied’ properly and when it’ll actually get done.  It’s always been a dream of mine since I commenced this blog that some day I’ll get my own domain, and now it’s finally happening!  Maybe now I can finally get my own erectile dysfunction ads in the sidebar.

In the meantime, I’ve finally figured out how to add custom drop down menus to WordPress.com posts.  Check it out!  Ahhh…so nice.  I’ve also tried to clean things up a little by reducing and parenting the categories.  Maybe no one else will notice, but it feels good to have done something.

In other waiting news, I’m going to officially become a ‘published’ author in book format.  It’s only one of many entries in an anthology but it’s well respected and paved the way for many successful writers.  And besides, it took a lot of hard work and luck (about a one in ten chance) to get selected, and then I had to endure the brutal process of book editing (working one-on-one with an editor) to get it into shape.  It’s a 4000 word non-fiction piece and I’m very proud of it, and the only thing I hope is that the publisher doesn’t use its veto power to deny it at the final hurdle!

While I wait for all that to sort itself out, I’m waiting to get the motivation to work on my novel(s) and another magazine piece I have signed up to write (with a mid-March deadline).  This one will require me to scour the Internet and go out to speak to professionals.  Looking forward to getting out there again.

Lastly, just waiting before class starts again.  Less than a month away.  Oh, and I’ll be going to Shanghai for a week in March.  Looks like more travel posts are coming.

Help: My Blog Needs a Makeover January 23, 2011

I think it’s time for this blog to have a makeover.  It recently celebrated its second birthday using the same theme it had one DAY ONE — Regulus, which I chose at the time primarily because of the colour scheme and the header.

Right now, at the very minimum, I am thinking of changing themes and give the front page, and in particular the messy categories (on the right column), a complete makeover.  When I started this blog I had no idea what I was doing so I came up with too many categories and sometimes threw a single post into two or three different categories.  Now I have 25+, with only a few sub-categories, making the category function almost worthless.

So apart from reducing the number of categories (which would take a really long time I think), I would like to have them on a drop down menu on the header, which unfortunately, I don’t think Regulus allows.

I’ve had a look around and I don’t really know what new style I should go for.  Should I continue the colourful ‘amateurish’ look or go for something cleaner, sharper, a little more professional looking?  It’s actually quite annoying that most of the WordPress themes have fixed widths, which always give them a narrow look that wastes all the space on the side.

Or should, with the traffic I get daily, I bite the bullet and finally get my own domain (ie pay for it) and start hosting advertisements?  Would that cheapen the blog?  At least it would give me a lot more freedom with the look and feel of it, except I’d probably need someone to help me since I have no idea how to do it all.

Anyway, WordPress themes that have stood out include the following (in alphabetical order).  Please vote below — you can choose more than one response.  Thanks in advance.
