We’re almost at the end of my China series and I’ve saved one of the best for last. For our final meal in Shanghai we went to a stylish Spanish/Peruvian tapas joint called Azul in the Xuhui district in southwest Shanghai.
Azul is very popular with expats who enjoy a lazy brunch on the weekend. The bottom floor looks more like a tapas bar and the upper floor (where we ate) resembles more of a restaurant. They have one of these big enticing menus that offer an assortment of delightful Spanish fusion dishes and beverages which you can order as part of a three-course brunch set + drink.
The prices are not considered cheap for locals but they are affordable compared to overseas prices (120RMB for 2 courses and 160RMB for 3).

Well, we didn’t actually order these scrumptious scones muffin-type things — they came for free and were awesome, especially with the spreads you see on the side. Probably should have left some space for the proper food and not scoffed them all down.
This was the Causa Limena, the picture of which speaks for itself. There’s tuna, avocado and egg, plus that tangy home-made mayo, garnished with Spanish onions on the side. Very different and very tasty.
The Salmon Crepes (I guess ‘crepes’ have a slightly different meaning to what I am used to), which has with it a tomato salsa. The menu had mayo with it but we asked them to leave it out (personally I would have kept it on!).
Our first sweet starter of the day, Pancakes! Fluffy, soft and with ice cream and chocolate sauce.
Next up, the Bruschetta with prawn-avocado salad. Better than the average bruschetta, you can believe that!
Then the second courses arrived. The main courses. This was the big one, the AZUL Breakfast, with two fried eggs, sausage, bacon, mushroom, spinach, tomato and potatoes. Huge.
This was an unusual choice, but a tasty one. It’s called ‘My Grandmom’s Chicken Soup’, and according to the menu is an old Peruvian recipe with chicken leg, noodles, potato, pumpkin, ginger, chilli, lima and cilantro. Even though the broth was light, the soup was full of flavour that had a real kick to it. Certainly didn’t expect it to be as good as it was.
One of my favourites. The Eggs Benedict, Azul style. Ham, spinach, potatoes and kick-ass hollandaise sauce. Wow.
Next, back to basics — a big, juicy burger with fries. The best part about this burger was the four condiments on the side, each providing a different flavour. It was like eating four different burgers!
Last but not least, the desserts. I must say dessert wasn’t their strongest asset but this sweet Peruvian flan was still pretty good.
Finally, the Banana and Chocolate Tart.
In all, it was a delightful, albeit extremely filling experience. The last thing I expected to have in Shanghai was such an interesting Spanish/Peruvian brunch! Great taste, atmosphere and variety to choose from. Highly recommended.
