The Bull Demon King is one of the key characters of Journey to the West, best captured by the TV show, Monkey Magic. It also happens to be the name of an awesome cheap steak joint at the Shida Night Markets in Taipei.
The Shida Night Markets is a hot spot for university students, especially those from the nearby National Taiwan Normal University (don’t ask me why this university is more ‘normal’ than the others…), which has a very high ratio of foreign students. Walking around at night, it’s not unusual to hear people speaking English.
The markets don’t have a whole lot of stuff to buy, but there is plenty of food. And from what I have tasted dare there, dare I say Shida ranks right up there amongst the other night markets in Taipei.
Anyway, Bull Demon King has an outdoor store in the middle of the Shida Night Markets, but apparently it has done so well it opened up a proper restaurant (with waiters and air-conditioning and all) in one of the side alleyways nearby.
Bull Demon King is cheap and it is delicious. For under TWD 200 per person, you can get a full meal set with unlimited refill iced tea, salad, bread, soup and a main course. Most people either get the beef steak or the chicken steak, which comes with spaghetti noodles and a fried egg, and is served on a sizzling platter.

I tried the chicken steak, which, for the record, is possibly the most amazing non-fried chicken I have tasted in years. The chicken thigh is so tender, so juicy, so succulent, and the sauce complements it so well. The mouth-watering aroma alone is enough to drive a hungry man crazy. The sides (salad, bread, soup, etc) were all pretty average though.
Taking everything into account, I’m going to give Bull Demon King an impressive 8 out of 10!
The only downside is that you get so full from the set that you don’t have enough space left to try all the other delicious foods and snacks at the Shida Night Markets.
How to get there
There are plenty of buses that go to National Taiwan Normal University, and Bull Demon King is pretty much inside the Shida Night Markets which is adjacent to the university. If you want to catch the MRT, you can – take it to Kuting station (on the green/orange line) and walk along Heping East Road until you get to Shida Road. It looks far on the map but it’s only a 5-10 minute walk.
